A brief introduction to Mukhtar Begum
Mukhtar Begum was a famous and highly regarded classical singer of her
times (1930s and 1940s). She was born in Amritsar, India. She was the elder
sister of legendary classical singer of Pakistan Farida Khanum. She has a very short
participation in the Hindi movies of her times but her career in singing such
as Dadra, Thumri, and Ghazals had made her an icon artist of Subcontinent.

Mukhtar Begum got her initial training in music from Mian Mehrban Khan
later she underwent for a full time and long training from the Ustad Ashiq Ali
Khan of Patiala Gharana. During her peak days she used to sing and perform Mujras
in the Hawalis of Nawabs and courts of Maharajas all over the undivided India.
She was fully equipped with the practices of different genres of classical
music.

In her last years she was living in Karachi where she died in February,
5, 1982.
