Introduction to Jugalbandi
Jugalbandi (meaning entwined twins) is an Indian Classical performance between two solo performers. It is a duet on two different instruments. The duet could be a vocal one or an instrumental one but instruments play a major role in it.
This is an instrumental duet played on sitar & shenai in dhun chaiti by trumpet player Ustad Bismillah Khan and sitarist Ustad Vilayat Khan. In Jugalbandi a competition exists between the two performers and both acts as a lead player.
Chaiti comes under in series of seasonal songs. These are semi-classical songs which are sung in March and April (Sri Rama Navami a Holy month of Hindu calendar which is also called as the month of Chait). The seasonal song are most sung in the villages of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
